Chapter 27 The Night's Watch
Chapter 27 The Night's Watch
"The so-called 'potion blending' is the use of alchemy to create extraordinary organs from materials containing sexual characteristics, which are then fused with one's own sexual characteristics, ultimately transforming the secret knowledge into one's own."
Oliver's fingers traced lines of alchemy recipes across the black book, his tone calm and clear:
"But there is one extremely important point to note: the properties of the material must be as close as possible to your own property composition."
Homotropic materials are ideal, as they do not trigger additional rejection reactions during fusion.
Materials with different properties pose a much higher risk, especially when the material contains criteria that are completely incompatible with or even mutually exclusive with its own properties, which may trigger a rejection reaction similar to secret contamination.
"So, it seems that as long as the secret modification and potion concoction are completed, wouldn't the sequence advancement be a direct success?" Lucius pushed the logic Oliver had provided a step further:
Is the atmosphere-building effect in the third phase still necessary?
"For a wild-type Sequence user, reaching this point is already a success." Oliver first uttered a comment tinged with obvious disdain, then said seriously:
"But for those in the Church Sequence, the third stage is the true core."
The essence of the sequence belongs to divine grace, and the atmosphere created in the third stage is ultimately to please the deity corresponding to the sequence path.
You need to set up a ritual space that conforms to the belief system of your church, using specific music, incense, prayers, and symbols to create an environment that will attract divine favor.
According to incomplete and undisclosed statistics from various churches... this group saved at least 20% of those who were promoted.
Lucius listened and said he understood; wasn't Gray, the other member of the detective agency he hadn't met yet, the best example? Then he suddenly paused, lost in thought:
"Wait a minute! There's no god at the end of the path of the Feast-Serving Apostle, so who will I be pleasing then?"
Lucius asked Oliver about his thoughts, receiving a sharp-headed reply:
"An incomplete sequence might not require a third stage, but it's unlikely that a third stage wouldn't be necessary..."
What kind of answer is that? Oliver himself felt the answer was too vague and could only quote the answer from the book:
To please the sexual aspect.
Since sequencers can extract sequence pathways from sexual characteristics, pleasing sexual characteristics seems to be the best explanation.
Lucius accepted the answer for the time being, silently noted down this part of the knowledge, and continued to study with Oliver.
…………
At 4 p.m., the two finished their classes for the day.
Lucius gained a lot; he made no fewer than dozens of annotations in the black book Oliver had given him.
From methods for detecting extraordinary organs to temperature control in potion concoction, from compatibility tables to rules for avoiding common ritual traps.
The most important point is about the bisexual approach of the Feasting Apostles.
If he wanted to minimize his chances of rejection during the potion-making process, he would at least need to learn a secret manual containing the core knowledge of the cup aspect, so that his extraordinary organs could simultaneously become familiar with the resonance of the two aspects of power before they took shape.
"Miss Moran certainly has no shortage of secret tips for cup reading, but Felix's application for me included this resource, and I don't have that much money."
Lucius abandoned his idea of obtaining the secret of the Cup in advance, walked to the eighth Scar Door, and silently recited "Relics Storage Room".
He opened his eyes as the texture under his feet changed from the carpet in the corridor to hard, smooth stone slabs, and found himself standing in front of a huge obsidian door.
A very faint scent of jasmine filled the air. Lucius, using the light from the gas lamps on the walls on either side of the door, looked up and made out the relief patterns on them:
A female figure wearing a jasmine crown is carved in the center of the gate, with long hair cascading down from under the crown, and her body covered with scabs painted in deep red.
"Lucius, over here," a hoarse voice came through.
Lucius looked to his left and saw Miles standing in the doorway of the room, which was embedded in the wall. His thin figure looked like he might collapse at any moment.
He stepped forward and said instinctively, "Miles, the weather is really nice today."
Lucius stopped abruptly as soon as he spoke. In such a dimly lit place, who knew what the weather was like outside?
Fortunately, Miles didn't seem to care. He turned around, picked up a black obsidian box from the long table behind him, opened it to reveal its contents, and then said:
"This is the Night Watchman's Proof. It does not require active activation. The person who carries it is immune to one dream invasion from a Radiant being below the third rank. The only known side effect is that the emotion 'compassion' will gradually disappear if the person carries it for a long time."
Lucius accepted the Night's Watch badge, an exquisite emblem with a red-eyed eye in the center and two straight-handled hooks crossed behind him.
"I don't seem to feel anything?" He wore the badge inside his jacket so that it wasn't conspicuous.
"Things forged by the Blazing Ones are inherently very low-risk," Miles added, as if reading his mind, then lifted his hand from the box, gesturing for him to leave.
"You should leave. Something else will happen here soon, and it will be dangerous for someone who is not part of the hierarchy."
Seeing this, Lucius had no choice but to stop his research on the Night's Watch token. Miles's tone, though well-intentioned, lacked warmth, making him realize that there was no room for negotiation.
He silently repeated "corridor" in his mind.
After Lucius came out, he habitually looked at the clock on the wall; it was just before 4:10.
With plenty of time before dinner, he could go back to Bank Street to prepare a hearty dinner and also carry out the dinner plan he had come up with yesterday.
Even at 4 p.m., the steam tram service was still very limited, but fortunately, he only had to wait 10 minutes for the next one.
When Lucius arrived at Bank Street station, he didn't go straight back to his apartment after getting off the train. Instead, he turned right and pushed open the door to Moran Bookstore.
The copper bell on the door jingled.
Miss Moran was still sitting behind the counter; today's newspaper was the latest issue.
He glanced at the side facing him; the cover was a full-page illustration of the Southern Continent's spice trade, with the title "Issue Two: On the Differential Application of Black Pepper in Red Meat and River Fish."
Lucius tapped lightly on the edge of the counter as usual, waiting for Moran to put down the newspaper.
When those two gray eyes moved from the newspaper to Lucius's face, he could clearly see that Miss Moran's attention had not yet been drawn back from her reverie about the food.
"Miss Moran, I'll be making sweet and sour fish today. Would you mind trying my cooking?" Lucius said with a smile.
"Okay." Moran's answer was as crisp as ever.
