Chapter 166 The Tacit Understanding Between Spellcasters
Under the strict hereditary monarchy, King Susas was the sole and true ruler of the kingdom.
Unlike the Nord royal family, which must rely on parliament, royal officials, and the legion to maintain a balance.
In Sussus, the king is the supreme ruler, wielding absolute power over diplomacy, military affairs, the economy, the nobility, and many other areas.
Even though the lifespan of all races in the material plane has generally shortened due to the silence of the gods and the decrease in the concentration of ether, the lifespan of pure-blooded elves is still several times that of humans.
In the thousand years since the invasion of the Underdark, the Kingdom of Susas has only had five kings. Compared to other political systems, the number of changes in the throne is negligible.
At this moment, King Susas, seated on his throne, looked at Grayson kneeling before him and said, "My child, you should continue to hide in the shadows until the families behind the assassins are all captured and the true mastermind is exposed, then come to see me."
Grayson raised his head: "Father, this is nothing. I am the first in line to the throne of the Susas royal court."
If I were to hide away and never show my face again because of a single, simple assassination attempt, how could I possibly inherit—a kingdom protected by the spirits and gods?
"Grayson, my child."
King Susas gazed at him and spoke slowly.
"No matter what, safety comes first. As long as you're alive, there's always hope."
On this land, I have witnessed the destruction of too many kingdoms and races—but as long as one lives, anything can continue to exist—
He continued, "The kingdom still faces too many crises."
The council of nobles is stirring, and the powerful nobles are unhappy that we have divided power among the honorary nobles.
The Nords covet our lands, and the Free Cities seek to seize our wealth.
The mages of the magic academy remained aloof and indifferent to everything from their high towers.
We can only rely on ourselves.
We must maintain stability; time is on our side.
Grayson listened, his face displaying just the right amount of respect.
King Susas smiled and said, "In the future, my position will only belong to you."
Grayson responded, "I would much rather that my father live a long life—"
King Susas smiled, then suddenly began to cough violently.
Grayson looked worried: "Father, are you still not well?"
King Susas shook his head.
Soon, a hooded figure silently emerged from the shadows, which the guards ignored.
A figure moved through the crowd to the throne, knelt down, and handed a potion to King Susas, who took it and drank it all in one gulp.
The coughing stopped, but King Susas's face seemed to have turned even paler.
Grayson's eyes showed "worry," but he hesitated to speak.
"Go back, child."
The future belongs to you.
Grayson nodded: "Yes, then I'll take my leave."
He rose and left, passing the guards, walking out of the heavy gate, and descending the tower.
Only after leaving the tower did he raise his head, gazing at the majestic spire beneath the blue sky, and murmur to himself in a barely audible voice: "Father, the future is too far away—if we don't hurry, it will be too late for everything."
He seemed to be convincing himself, his gaze gradually becoming firm.
Meanwhile, outside the massive white walls of the Susas royal court.
Kane's ship sailed into the dock.
The harbor was filled with ships and guns, and the docks were bustling with people.
Sigrún has taught at the Iceland University of the Arts as a part-time lecturer since and was Dean of the Department of Fine Art from -. In – she held a research position at Reykjavík Art Museum focusing on the role of women in Icelandic art. She studied fine art at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts and at Pratt Institute, New York, and holds BA and MA degrees in art history and philosophy from the University of Iceland. Sigrún lives and works in Iceland.
Several half-elf sheriffs boarded the deck, seemingly intending to search the cabins, while the unsuspecting boatman remained on deck.
Kane's eyes flickered, his mind racing.
The three of them are still wanted by the police. What should they do now?
boom.
Arundel stepped out of the cabin, onto the deck, and approached, pulling out a badge: "We are from the Mage Academy."
"Academy?"
After verifying the authenticity of the badge, the sheriff bowed respectfully and then left with his men.
"Yes, sir."
Ella breathed a sigh of relief, and Kane nodded slightly, beginning to examine the Susas Royal Court before them.
The city blends seamlessly with the mountains behind it, shimmering with pearly white and moonstone-like silver luster under the sunlight.
The buildings feature tall, slender lines and numerous spires.
In the center stood the tallest tower.
Following Kane's gaze, Arundel explained, "That's the inner court, the residence of the Sussas royal family."
The tallest of them was the bedroom and administrative center of King Sussus.
The other towers on the periphery belong to institutions such as the Noble Council and the Academy of Mages.
Kane nodded.
Limited by the laws of physics and technology, these towers are far shorter than the skyscrapers he had seen in his previous life.
But in a world with relatively low productivity yet possessing magic, it is already a miracle.
"Let's disembark," Arundel murmured as he entered the cabin.
A hazy glow immediately enveloped Ella and Risa's faces, and when you looked again, their appearances had changed.
Ella's half-elf features were hidden, and she was transformed into an ordinary human woman, even her appearance became somewhat ordinary.
Risa's hair color and eye color are completely different.
Kane's eyes flickered slightly.
The Illusion Academy—as a branch of the school specializing in illusion, possesses a skill that, while seemingly just a trick, is nearly as effective as the "Disguise Technique" he has mastered.
After Arundel finished casting the spell on the two women, he turned to Kane: "Lord Kane, you—"
Kane understood and brushed his hand across his face.
The drow elf's appearance instantly changed, revealing the face of a human mercenary named "Kate".
"Your Drow's secret techniques are indeed exquisite."
Arundel exclaimed in admiration.
Many spellcasting organizations develop unique spells based on divine or arcane research, but he absolutely did not believe that Kane had completely changed the race.
Risa remained expressionless; in her heart, she had long regarded Kane as a being similar to herself, a being beyond the ordinary.
Ella looked amazed; she had never seen Kane use this technique before.
The four disembarked and followed the crowded flow of people until they reached the magnificent city gate.
Kane's gaze swept across the city gate, where many elite soldiers were stationed. Longbows and scimitars seemed to be their standard equipment, capable of both ranged and melee combat.
Above the city gate, Kane, with his exceptional eyesight, saw that ballistae were placed every hundred meters, and even magical cannons were mixed in among them.
Such a city—if it weren't for the demons' bizarre abilities, a direct assault by ordinary professionals would likely have come at an extremely high cost.
He was pondering how to pass the inspection.
After all, he didn't believe that a heavily guarded place like the Susas Royal Court wouldn't have spells or rituals to detect disguises.
Arundel seemed to sense his hesitation and said, "Please come with me."
He led the group around the city wall instead of heading towards the main city gate.
As they approached a section of the wall, a soldier stepped out.
Arundel showed his badge again, and the soldier saluted respectfully, gesturing for them to proceed to the other side.
The group followed, moving further and further away from the main city gate, until they arrived at a section of the city wall that was closely connected to the mountain.
"We've arrived," Arundel said.
"We're here?" Risa asked, puzzled. "This is clearly a city wall!"
Ella looked up at the smooth wall that soared into the clouds and blended seamlessly into the mountainside, reaching out to touch it with a puzzled expression.
Kane replied, "No, we have indeed arrived."
He stared at the wall that blended seamlessly with the mountainside. "I think I know."
Arundel, who had intended to keep everyone in suspense, paused, "Lord Kane, are you sure?"
Risa and Ella immediately believed it, because Kane never spoke without certainty.
Kane remembered a wizard movie series he had seen in his previous life and said, "I'll give it a try."
He looked at the wall, whispered an incantation, and a huge fiery hand immediately took shape, poised to slam into the wall.
Just as the flames were about to touch the wall, Arundel hurriedly waved his hand: "Stop! Stop, stop, stop! — Let me do it."
As he turned around, he complained, "Lord Kane, you really lack the tacit understanding between spellcasters."
In his mind, Kane, as a second-tier arcane mage who had mastered runes, should use his wisdom to investigate the mechanism and then marvel at its ingenious design.
Instead of directly attempting a brute-force attack.
He didn't want to be held responsible for damaging college property.
Kane remained silent, looking at the white-bearded old mage, muttered a few incantations, tapped the wall three times with his short staff, paused briefly, and then tapped it again.
Immediately afterwards, the wall itself remained still, but a chilly breeze seeped out from the side.
Kane's eyes flickered, realizing he had guessed wrong.
The city wall was merely a mechanism; the passage was on the adjacent mountainside.
The "mountain" connected to the city wall still looks like rock, but the presence of wind indicates that the mountain is just an illusion.
Behind it, there was a passageway.
"Please." A hint of smugness flashed through Arundel's mind as he saw the astonished expressions on everyone's faces.
Risa stuck out her tongue secretly after he turned to lead the way.
Kane said nothing more, and the group passed through the mountain illusion, facing the slightly chilly breeze, and entered the hidden passage.
From the outside, it looks as if the group of people were quietly swallowed up by the mountain rocks and merged into them.
