Chapter 7 Bear-Headed Man
Chapter 7 Bear-Headed Man
The scenery on both sides flashed by, and Simon gritted his teeth, racing against the bloodthirsty monster.
In the pitch-black forest, with only the faint light of the spores, accidents are bound to happen.
He stumbled over a rock after passing through another grove of trees, forcing him to slow down.
There's a sound of wind on the right!
Simon instinctively dodged to the side! A dark shadow whizzed past his shoulder and slammed into the trunk of a large tree to his left with a dull thud!
Rather than a hunting dog, it is more like a predator such as a wolf or leopard.
Its limbs were long and its muscles were bulging, making it stronger than any hunting dog he had ever seen. Its entire body was hairless, covered only with a layer of grayish-brown scar-like tissue that looked like it had been skinned. A row of deformed bone spurs grew on its back, pulsating rhythmically with its breathing.
When its sneak attack failed, it launched another fierce attack, leaping forward with both legs!
Holding guns in both hands, Simon kept his eyes fixed on the approaching shadows!
The distance was so close, and even a simple glance was enough to give Simon a tremendous shock.
It has no face, only a mouth...
A huge mouth that takes up the entire face!
The mouth was opening, like flower petals blooming, like four lips curling outwards to reveal layers upon layers of inward-hooking teeth. One circle, two circles, three circles, the sharp teeth swirling like a vortex deep into the throat, like a meat grinder that would devour its prey!
The gaping maw was slowly closing, its foul-smelling heat spraying onto his palms. In just a second—no! In just an instant—his hands would be shredded into minced meat!
bass--
At the critical moment, a huge black shadow descended from the sky, wielding a blade that instantly severed the monster's neck!
The monster's robust body suddenly lost its strength and collapsed limply...
Simon carefully withdrew his hand and looked up at the man who had saved him.
The man was wearing a brown, coarse cloth shirt, the fabric thick and stained with mud and dried blood, and matching trousers, along with high leather boots.
He was very tall, with broad shoulders and a thick back, and his whole body resembled an old tree, standing firmly and silently in place.
He was wearing... on his head
A bear's head?
To be precise, it was a hat made from a bear's furry head, with the bearskin attached to the head and draped over his shoulders like a strange cape.
The man was also staring at him...
His face, covered in stubble and etched with the marks of time and scars, had a pair of brown eyes.
It was murky, weary, and carried something Simon couldn't describe, like a light that had been burning for a very long time and was about to burn out.
"Thank you..." Simon said, panting. "May I ask your name?"
"They all call me Mr. Bell," the strange "bear-headed man" replied in a hoarse voice.
Simon then looked at his weapon...
The weapon exudes a savage industrial feel, as if it were a product pieced together from countless discarded parts and a harpoon.
Its main body is a thick metal pipe, the paint of which has long been peeled off, revealing a dark iron gray color.
At the end of the metal tube was a fin-shaped blade, standing upright like a shark's dorsal fin, reflecting a faint light under the illumination of the spores.
Suddenly, a sharp glint flashed in Mr. Bell's cloudy eyes!
"Wait! That guy isn't dead yet!"
The monster's corpse was trembling eerily...
Mr. Bell swung his heavy weapon and slashed at the back of its neck, nearly shattering its neck bones.
A piercing shriek erupted from its enormous maw, and its bones cracked as it struggled and used all its strength to violently tilt its head back...
click-
The moment the two broken bones were barely pieced together, the fractured neck bone was repairing itself at a speed visible to the naked eye! It was as if two broken bones were roughly glued together with cheap adhesive and then haphazardly added nerves and flesh, yet it truly regained its ability to fight!
Simon held his guns in both hands, cautiously keeping his distance from the monster. He was about to extend an invitation to Mr. Bell to cooperate when he turned around but did not see the "bear-headed man" anywhere.
Could it be that he escaped?
wrong!
Instead of deserting, Mr. Bell grabbed his strange weapon, his eyes gleaming, and charged toward the monster!
"Mr. Bell!" Simon shouted.
That's too late.
The monster had just had its cervical spine repaired and was shaking its head when Mr. Bell bravely rushed in front of it, gripping the heavy harpoon tightly with both hands, his muscles tense, and with all his might, he swung the weapon wildly down at the monster's head!
bass--
The sound of metal clashing was like striking a steel plate.
The moment the monster's mouth closed completely, its face took on a metallic texture, and the grayish-brown scar tissue contracted and hardened, like a natural shield.
Bell's harpoon struck it, sparks flying everywhere. The immense recoil made his hands numb, his tiger's mouth split open, and blood flowed down the harpoon shaft.
The monster remained completely still.
It kept its mouth shut, facing Bell with its metallic face as if mocking her, then suddenly tilted its head back and rammed its whole body forward!
boom……
Bell was as if he had been gored by a charging bison. He was thrown into the air, flew five or six meters away, crashed into a tree, and fell to the ground in the mud.
The harpoon flew out of his hand and stuck into the muddy ground, the shaft still trembling.
"Cough cough cough..." He coughed violently, looking up at a small patch of sky above the abyss, his eyes unfocused and his expression relieved as he muttered to himself, "Iron Emperor, the Iron Emperor is calling me from the sky. This is the glorious death I have been waiting for, to bravely sacrifice myself in the fight against the monster."
"Hey! Wake up!" Simon rushed over and slapped him across the face!
Bell blinked, his cloudy vision refocusing.
He stared at Simon for half a second, then grinned, blood smeared on his teeth, the smile looking both crazy and foolish.
"I'm not dead yet..." he said, his tone surprisingly tinged with regret.
A neighing sound came from behind.
The monster stood up again, shaking its head, and its mouth opened again, revealing swirling teeth.
Simon turned around, holding the skull-crushing nail gun steadily in both hands, and aimed at the rapidly approaching dark figure.
boom--
The shot hit the monster squarely in the chest, and purple blood gushed out of the bullet hole, as thick as glue.
But the gun didn't seem to do any damage to it; the monster's deformed body swayed and continued charging forward.
Simon calmly switched to his gun and continued firing!
boom--
The last bullet hit the same spot, but the hole was a little bigger, and more purple blood flowed out.
Around the wound, new granulation tissue is wriggling, slowly but visibly healing.
Simon took a step back, his heart pounding.
The nail gun was useless against that thing.
He needs more powerful weapons!
But what does he have now?
He had no large-caliber sniper rifles, no explosives, no machine guns with unlimited ammunition; all he had now was…
He turned to look at the harpoon stuck in the ground, Mr. Bell's weapon, that exaggeratedly shaped harpoon.
He rushed over, grabbed the fork lever with both hands, and pulled it out...
After a brief trial, he found the weight of the harpoon to be just right; he could swing it easily, making it a handy weapon.
He dragged the harpoon backward, his gaze sweeping over the fork...
Wait a minute! He noticed something unusual on the harpoon shaft, near the fork tip, that he hadn't seen before.
A strange device wrapped in sheet metal was welded to the back of the harpoon blade, resembling a miniature version of a crossbow.
A sharp crossbow bolt is mounted in the groove, and a trigger made of a thin iron strip is located below the device.
Crossbows? Why would there be crossbows?
Before he could think it through, the monster's roar was already close at hand!
Just then, Bell shouted, "Aim the harpoon at the monster and pull the trigger! Quickly!"
The monster opened its mouth and lunged at him.
