Chapter 39 Your mission is over
Chapter 39 Your mission is over
The king of the borderlands carefully examined his face.
"Who's in charge here? Honestly, Lake? Smallwood? Willers? No, he's too weak... Whose tent is this?"
I've said too much already.
"You didn't find his body?"
Hamma scoffed dismissively, "Stupid crow!"
Yeah, I was so stupid. How could there be corpses left after the White Walkers attacked?
Jon swallowed hard.
"If you answer with another question, I will hand you over to the Bone King and Oriel."
Mance Rayder approached Jon as he made his assurances:
"Who's in charge here?"
Taking it one step further~
As Jon thought about it, under immense pressure, a destructive urge suddenly rose within him.
If I take one more step closer, perhaps I can perish here with him.
He reached for the hilt of the sword with its long claws.
"Dare to draw your sword? I'll make your bastard head roll before it's even unsheathed!"
"I'm losing patience with you, Jon Snow," Mance said.
"Speak," Ygritte urged impatiently, "whoever it is, is already dead anyway."
Jon's impulse was dispelled by the cold wind; his brow furrowed, and the wound on his cheek reopened.
This is too difficult! Jon thought in despair.
But if you want to play the chameleon, how can you not become a chameleon?
"It's Old Xiong!"
He finally said it.
"The old man is personally involved?" Hama didn't believe it. "Really? Then who's in command of Black Castle?"
Bowen Marsh.
This time Jon didn't delay and answered immediately.
No matter what I ask you to do, you are not allowed to disobey; you must do it in accordance with everything.
Mans laughed heartily:
"If that's the case, then we've won without a fight. Bowen is better at counting swords than wielding one."
"Old Bear himself is overseeing this place," Jon said. "The terrain here was already treacherous and fortified, but he has further strengthened the defenses, setting traps and driving in stakes to deal with..."
"……I?"
Mans finished speaking for him.
"Hmph, he's dreaming. If I were stupid enough to attack a fortified ranger from above, I'd be lucky to suffer at least a five-to-one casualty ratio."
He pursed his lips:
"But when the dead roam, walls, pits, stakes, and swords become meaningless. No man can fight the dead, Jon Snow, and no one knows this better than I do."
He looked up and gazed at the darkening sky.
"These crows seem to have inadvertently helped us a lot; I've been wondering why our group wasn't attacked."
We were still a hundred miles from the Great Wall, and the weather was getting colder and colder.
Valamir, send your wolves to sniff out and track the ghouls, lest they ambush you.
The Bone King doubled the number of patrols and made sure everyone carried a torch and flint.
"Jar, go and inform all the raiders that they must set off at dawn."
"Mans," the dangling shirt said coldly, "I want the raven's bones."
Ygritte stepped forward and blocked Jon's path.
"He was just protecting his brothers from the past; you can't kill him for that."
"I think he still treats them like brothers."
“No,” Ygritte insisted, “he didn’t kill me on Broken Hand’s orders, and he almost killed Broken Hand, everyone knows that.”
After she finished speaking, she couldn't help but glance at Colin, who was standing trembling beside Lynn.
Jon's breath frosted in the air.
He looked into Mance Rayder's eyes, his fingers opening and closing habitually.
"I am wearing the cloak you gave me, Your Majesty."
"A sheepskin cloak!" Ygritte exclaimed. "Every night, we danced under it!"
Jarl grinned, and the dog-headed mammoth chuckled along.
"Is that so, Jon Snow?"
Having obtained the information he wanted, Mance Rayder was in high spirits and gently asked Jon:
"Her and you?"
Upon hearing this, Lynn suddenly recalled the day Jon Snow was captured, when Mance said that Jon resembled him somewhat.
It seems that the plot point of both men falling in love with the savage woman resonated with Mance in some way.
Jon Snow doesn't know if he can still distinguish between honor and shame, right and wrong.
May God forgive me.
"Yes," he said.
Mans nodded in satisfaction:
"Very good, then you two will set off with Jar tomorrow to participate in the operation. I will never separate two hearts that beat as one."
Things seemed to have come to a good end here. The Night's Watch's elite forces suffered heavy losses in the attack by wights, leaving the Wall Guards even more vulnerable, and victory was almost within reach.
But a voice suddenly interrupted everyone's high spirits.
"Jon Snow".
Although the sound of the severed palm was weak, its penetrating power was not diminished in the slightest.
Ygritte immediately looked at him warily.
"Come here, your mission is over."
Jon looked like he'd been struck by lightning.
Lynn said at the opportune moment:
"Colin the One-Handed has surrendered to me, and Jon Snow, under his orders, is feigning to join the Free Men to gather information."
"One of the conditions for surrendering with a severed hand was to pardon Jon Snow, and I agreed to it."
The crowd was silent for a second, then the sound of a sword being drawn was broken.
Jon had his long claws in his hands.
He was like a young wolf caught in a pack of hounds, his face filled with disbelief, ignoring Lynn's words of pardon, preparing for a final desperate attempt.
Next to draw their swords were Mans, Hamma, Jarl, and Dingdangshan. Clan soldiers cutting horse meat nearby noticed something was wrong and surrounded them.
Ygritte was the most excited.
"Are you drawing your sword to kill me, Jon Snow?"
Holding a bone dagger, she walked tearfully toward the bewildered Jon, pressing her chest against the sword and forcing him back several steps until her back slammed against the stone wall, leaving her with nowhere to retreat.
"You damned crow, you liar!"
She cursed and brandished a dagger toward Jon's neck, but tears blurred her vision, and she easily dodged the blow.
Jon still looked disheveled, his helplessness and inner turmoil almost written on his face.
"I have already said that Jon Snow has been pardoned by me."
Seeing this, Lynn had no choice but to emphasize it again.
"Tie him up, but don't hurt him. Mans, let's go inside the tent to talk."
Lynn walked into a tent that looked fairly intact, and Colin followed him with a limp.
Mans sheathed his sword, opened the tent flap for Colin, and grinned as he said:
"Old friend, it looks like we'll be fighting side by side again. There's a good craftsman among the Thern people who can make you a decent prosthetic leg."
Behind him, the agile Jarl took advantage of Jon's momentary lapse in attention and kicked him in the back of the knee. Jon immediately lost his balance, and several raiders rushed forward and pinned him down.
"If it weren't for the Star Child sparing your life, I would have skinned you alive today and used your skin as a sleeping mat."
The Bone King grinned and punched Jon Snow in the ribs, nearly knocking him out of his wits.
Once the noise outside subsided, Lynn had righted the overturned table and placed three small stools on it.
Colin sat down without a word, all the bandaged wounds on his body bleeding again.
"You need to change some bandages, your severed palm."
Mans spoke lightly, seemingly enjoying his conversation with his former black-clad brother.
