Academic genius: Arcane Invasion of America

Chapter 33 Paper Publication Methods

Chapter 33 Paper Publication Methods

The University of Chicago does not encourage skipping grades.

After all, for schools, losing one student with a $3000 tuition fee per academic year is a huge loss.

Therefore, from the perspective of ordinary people, Li Ang's request would be somewhat difficult to fulfill.

However, for the head of the mathematics department, Sanders, this minor inconvenience was nothing compared to the enormous benefits that Li Ang could bring.

After a moment of silence, Sanders made a decision, "Here's what we'll do, Li Ang. The second-year math students are about to take their exams. I'll arrange for you to take an exam with them. If your score is good, you can go straight to your third year next semester. No one else will have anything to say about that."

Li Ang nodded. He could see Sanders' predicament. Although the result was still some distance from his goal of getting into university in two months, it was still acceptable.

Only Jett stared wide-eyed in surprise, saying, "Director McKlain, there doesn't seem to be a precedent for skipping grades at this school, and Li Ang doesn't have his first-year transcript. How will he get his diploma when he graduates in his senior year?"

Sanders snorted. "Jett, you should focus on your research with Kayla or help Leon familiarize himself with the school. Don't worry about the administrative stuff; you wouldn't understand anyway. Since I promised Leon I could arrange it, I definitely can."

After saying that, Sanders turned to Li Ang and said with a friendly expression, "Li Ang, to be honest with you, it does take some effort to arrange an exam like this. Therefore, I hope you will do well in the math exams in your second year and strive to get an A+ in every subject."

"No problem." Li Ang nodded.

"Then I'm all set. Jett, you can take Leon to complete the formalities."

"Yes, Director McKlain."

……

After saying goodbye to Sanders, Leon and Jack wandered around the University of Chicago, completing their enrollment procedures.

On the way, Li Ang took the opportunity to take a good look at the campus.

Unlike the shiny glass curtain walls of Chinese campuses in my memory, most of the buildings here are made of dark gray granite, and the overall architecture belongs to the Gothic style.

The playground was already bustling with activity. Some were running, some were playing ball, and every now and then a few boys would walk past Li Ang and Jet with their arms around each other's shoulders.

Passing by the library, Jet gave Li Ang a brief introduction to the University of Chicago Library's collection.

Of all the things mentioned above, Li Ang was most interested in the university library. He was just waiting to finish all the formalities and borrow a few books to take back with him.

At the same time, Li Ang also discovered something: the tuition fees he had prepared in advance were completely useless.

"So, Professor Nolan gave me advance notice and covered all my tuition for a year?"

Jeremy nodded.

He had just learned of this news from the logistics department. He never expected that Professor Nolan, who was usually so strict and advocated that everyone should be self-reliant, would actually pay thousands of dollars in tuition fees for Li Ang.

Li Ang pictured Kayla: a celebrity scholar with gold-rimmed glasses, whose features resembled Nicole's but possessed a more intellectual beauty.

He could almost hear what Kayla had once "accidentally" said: "Nicole, let me remind you, this money is for your housing. Don't just donate it to anyone. Put away your cheap sympathy. Leon works at the Danube Clinic, and his daily wage of $15 is already pretty good. He has to earn it through his own efforts, not through you."

then……

Kayla paid for his tuition for a year.

Indeed, some people's words are best taken with a grain of salt and not taken seriously.

After completing all the formalities, Li Ang went to the library and borrowed six books before saying goodbye to Jet and taking the bus home alone.

"Foundations of Algebraic Geometry" by Andrew Weil, "Lectures on Differential Geometry" by Shiing-Shen Chern, "Trigonometric Series" by Antony Sigmund...

"As expected, the University of Chicago Library holds 'secret manuals of truth' that are simply unavailable to the outside world."

"Just reading these few books is enough to get into the University of Chicago... especially since I didn't even have to pay a penny in tuition."

"Starting tomorrow, my daily schedule will need to be adjusted slightly. I'll be at school, and when I don't have classes, I can work out for a few hours at the Danube Clinic. After that, I'll go to the gym to work out, earning 0.1 units of stamina each day, and also find time to practice shooting with Old Martin..."

After making simple plans, Li Ang got off the bus early at Maxwell Street and told Nicole and Martin that he had been admitted to the University of Chicago.

The former immediately asked Li Ang if he was moving to the school, and never came to the Danube Clinic again.

Nicole only cheered again when she heard that Li Ang had no plans to move and would occasionally come to the Danube Clinic to earn money part-time.

The latter grinned, showing off his large gold teeth, and reminded Li Ang that not everyone at university was a good person, so he should be careful and contact him anytime if he encountered any problems.

……

The next day.

Kayla Nolan's office, Department of Mathematics, University of Chicago.

"Hello, Li Ang, I'm sorry I couldn't make it in time yesterday because of something else, but I think Jet has already taken care of everything for you."

"Yes, Professor." Leon looked at Kayla and nodded slightly.

The woman before me had medium-length light blonde hair, wore a black suit dress, and gold-rimmed glasses. Combined with her appearance, which perfectly matched the fantasies of male college students about a female teacher, in the old Chinese parlance, Keira Nolan could have relied on her looks, but instead, she was exceptionally talented.

"From now on, you'll be my student. I heard from Sanders that you're planning to skip your freshman and sophomore years and go straight to your junior year?"

"Yes, I think this will save time and allow me to study mathematics better."

Li Ang wasn't sure if it was just his imagination, but he felt that after he finished speaking, Kayla's lips curled up slightly, and then he heard her say, "A very smart decision, I completely agree. But if you want to save time, why bother working part-time at the clinic? The commute is the biggest waste of time."

Li Ang shook his head. "The clinic's income is my only stable source of income right now. Professor, you don't want me to rely on others for a living, do you?"

"It's good that you think that way." Kayla remained expressionless. "However, you can go to the clinic for two hours every day from now on, just to help Nicole with her work. The daily wage will be $15, no more and no less."

"Thank you, Professor."

"And another thing..." Kayla pointed to the typewriter on the table with the IBM logo, "Nicole may have told you that I don't often appear in the math department. Since we have some time today, let's work together to improve your short paper on Gaussian elimination for block matrices."

"no problem."

Following Kayla's direction, Li Ang looked at the most popular typewriter at the time.

After deciding to publish a paper to gain prestige, Li Ang spent time studying typewriters of that era.

The most distinctive feature of this IBM electric typewriter is its replaceable printhead, about the size of a golf ball. IBM specially manufactured printheads containing mathematical symbols for users to replace and input mathematical symbols.

Of course, some mathematical formulas are too complex. In practice, the text is typed, the equations are left blank, and the author writes them in by hand.
